Displaying the glory of God by delighting in Him and declaring His truth!

This Week in the Word

Romans 7:24-25 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

In Romans 7 Paul transparently expresses the spiritual battle that rages inside of every Christian. We don’t want to sin—yet we still sin. We want to do what’s right, yet we fail so often. What’s the answer? Christ—fixing our eyes on Christ’s person and work. Although we will always struggle with sin, it is vital that we focus on Christ Himself, not on our sin. Sometimes our struggle seems so big that it consumes our perspective, but we must take our eyes off of struggling with our sin and focus on Christ.

19th Century Scottish pastor Robert Murray M’Cheyne once said “For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely." Through His death and resurrection Christ has freed us from the penalty and power of sin. May we fix our eyes on Him so that sin will lose its attraction and he will be all the more delightful to us.

1. How is the believer free from condemnation? (8:1-2) Why could the Law not free from condemnation? (8:3 )
2. How is the requirement ofthe Law fulfilled in us? (8:4) What does it mean to walk “according to the Spirit”? Why must believers set their minds on “the things of the Spirit”? (8:5-6)
3. How is the mind set on the flesh “hostile toward God” and his law? (8:7)Why is it impossible for those who are in the flesh to please God? (8:8)

Mothers’/Babies’ Cry Room
As a church we are so glad to have our children worshipping together with us in our corporate worship services. We do recognize though that it does take training and mentoring to help children to be able to benefit from our Sunday morning worship. This is one of the reasons why we have set-up a“Mothers’/Babies’ Cry Room.”  This is a place where mothers who are nursing can go with their babies, but it is also a place where younger children can be helped to benefit from our Sunday morning worship.

This is located in the 2nd floor hallway behind the soundproof glass we recently installed that overlooks our auditorium. We have installed a speaker so that our service can both be seen and heard from this location. We would encourage mothers who use this setting to help it be a place where their children’s needs can be ministered to, but also at the same time be a place where they can be part of our corporate worship service.

Prayer

Women’s Prayer
The ladies of COHBC meet each week on Thursdays from 9-10 am for prayer at our church facility in the Fellowship Hall. This is a very encouraging and challenging time to ask God to work in and through our ministry for His glory. If you have any questions contact Martha at 747-8584.

Elder Prayer
One of the primary priorities of Elders of a local church is to faithfully pray. Therefore as Elders we devote extended time each Thursday morning to prayer. Each week we proactively pray through a number of the families at our church, but it is helpful for us when you let us know specific prayer requests that you have. On Sundays, please jot down your prayer request on a response card and put it in the boxes in the back of the auditorium, or feel free to send me an Email (Jsmith@COHBC.org) during the week so that we will know how to pray for you more specifically.
